My path.
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”— Corinthians 10:31
1. Personal Details
My name is Iain Morrison and I live in Fife, Scotland, close to St Andrews. I spent decades in IT in various roles, abroad and in the UK. Thank you to my colleagues in Menzies Distribution for giving me art vouchers when I retired. As a child I used to watch my father as he did some oil paintings for a hobby. I started painting using his oil paints and every painting I do, I use a tube of his 1960's Winsor & Newton black oil paint, to make a stroke under my signature. Want to know some random facts about my art and me? Take my quiz.
2. This website
I created this website to display my oil paintings. The Gallery has a collection of several paintings, including an option to expand or zoom in on an area. The Portfolio section has details of selected paintings, including additional information, such as who the painting was for, or details about the history of a ship or the scene painted. My current favourite painting is the 'RRS Discovery', a ship sailing past an iceberg. With hindsight I should have built this site in a CMS like Wordpress™. As a result the site is not 100% mobile friendly (no hamburger menus here), no search option, shopping cart, blog etc. For a one page summary of the whole site and to get a complete list of all the pages (including links) go to the Site Map. This is in 'dark mode' and mobile friendly.
3. My Art
I’m naturally drawn to painting ships and the sea, but I do try to push myself toward other subjects, some of which you’ll find on this site. One big project was the ocean liner Metagama where I created a whole series exploring different sea states and weather conditions. More recently, I’ve begun experimenting with self‑portraits, though I’m not yet satisfied with any of the results. I keep trying to loosen up, to use broader, more confident strokes, but I often get happily sidetracked blending clouds or adding thin, wisps of sea foam to a wave. I’ve also explored other mediums, including acrylics and watercolours, but I always seem to return to my dad's favourite: oil.
4. Let's connect
Feel free to drop me a message through my contact form — I enjoy reading feedback. All fields need to be filled in: name, email, category, and comments. The email should look like a real one, but a harmless placeholder like dummy@dummy.com works just fine. Please don’t choose the Robot category… unless you’re actually a robot. There’s also a short 15‑second pause between submissions, along with a few other subtle traps to catch out any bots or wandering dark‑web AI Agents. Drop me a link to your art if you are also having fun making marks. Your way, my way, the sideways way — all valid. If you’re creating, you’re doing it right.
