HMS Chester
HMS Chester was a light cruiser of the Royal Navy.
She was involved in the initial action on 31st May 1916 as part of the battle of Jutland. Damaged and
outnumbered, she retreated from German scouting cruisers.
One of Chester's 5.5 inch guns is on display at the Imperial War Museum, London.
This painting was for the grandson of Captain Robert Lawson who was the captain of HMS Chester during the battle.
The scene recreates the run from Admiral Boedicker's four cruisers, as seen on the horizon.
I tried to give form to the shell splashes by adding colour and shadow to the water.
The bottom right is the remains of a shell splash next to the viewer.
